Synopsis: Building Service

In this module students will be introduced to services that are commonly provided in a building, primarily cold and hot water supply, sewerage disposal and treatment, drainage and storm water management, electrical supply, fire protection systems, mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning systems and mechanical transportation systems. Students are also made familiar with the basic requirements in planning, coordination and installation of these services related to the local Acts and By-Laws of Malaysia.

Module Teaching Objectives
  1. To create an understanding of the building services systems and integrate the basic requirements into the schematic designs.
  2. To introduce various types of building services systems that are available in order to produce a building which can be operational for public use.
  3. To give basic technical exposure that is required in building designs, problem solving skills at the early phase of design development. In turn, will assist the students to deliver buildings that are aesthetically functional.

Module Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify relevant information related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, mechanical air-conditioning, fire safety and vertical transportation system.
  2. Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.
  3. Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.
  4. Explain relevant information related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, mechanical air-conditioning, fire safety and vertical transportation system.
  5. Explain principles, systems, space implications and regulations related to water supply, storm water and waste water disposal.
  6. Explain principles, systems, space implications and regulations related to internal air quality and mechanical air conditioning.
Project 1: Application of Basic Building Services
Objectives
  1. To develop students’ understanding and knowledge of building services and its systems in design and construction.
  2. To apply appropriate building services systems and solution for a specific design.
  3. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical considerations.
  4. To develop students’ ability to resolve issues related to specific building services systems.
Learning Outcome
  1. Identify relevant systems related to water supply, electrical supply, sewage and storm water management.
  2. Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.
  3. Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.
Application of Basic Building Service
Different floor plans were distributed to us. Based on the floor plan we get, we were required to identify which building services are required in this particular building and also identify where to put them. In the end, we need to produce analytical boards of the building services we include in the building.
Project 2: Building Services In Public Buildings
Objectives
  1. To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems found in buildings (experiential learning).
  2. To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.
  3. To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems and statutory requirements (UBBL).
  4. To develop students’ understanding and familiarization in applying the correct graphic communications. standards (MS1184)
Learning Outcome
  1. Identify and understand relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, mechanical transportation system as well as fire protection systems.
  2. Understand the functions and purposes of building services systems.
  3. Understand the statutory requirements and regulations involved in building designs and its importance with regards to practicality and public safety.
Building Services In Public Buildings
As a group of six, we need to choose the Architecture Studio 4 design of one of our member and will continue our project according to his/her design. We were required to identify the building services needed and where to include in the building. In the end, we need to produce a report of the analysis and details of the building services we included.
