Synopsis: Building Construction 2

The subject aims to introduce structures as architecture by developing an understanding of the structural systems in construction technology in a unique way in relation to historical and innovative buildings. Skeletal, solid and surface construction systems are discussed and analyzed in terms of load and forces in a general term. Projects based on topics covered during lectures provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge gained as well as to further enhance their understanding of the topics.

Module Teaching Objectives
  1. To develop an understanding of the structural systems in construction and its application in the building construction.
  2. To identify and apply knowledge of load and forces in analyzing structural possibilities in the structural systems as part of the construction process.
Module Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify basic structural systems in construction.
  2. Recognize the implication of construction systems in design.
  3. Able to compare the different type construction systems.
  4. Apply construction systems in design.
  5. Differentiate construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on its structural elements.
  6. Analyze the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.
Project 1: Skeletal Construction (Temporary Bus Shelter)
Objectives
  • To create an understanding of skeletal structure and its relevant structural components.  To understand how a skeletal structure reacts under loading.
  • To demonstrate a convincing understanding of how skeletal construction works.
  • To be able to manipulate skeletal construction to solve an oblique design problem.
Learning Outcome
  • Apply construction system in design.
  • Recognize the implication of construction systems in design.
  • Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Building Construction

Objectives
  • To create an understanding of building components used and its assembly.
  • To demonstrate good drawing skills in building details and how it reacts under loading and force.
  • To be able to manipulate the selection of materials used and ensure its buildability.
Learning Outcomes
  • Identifications of basic structural systems in construction
  • Differentiate in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements.
  • Recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design.
  • Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Gridshell
We were required to look into gridshell construction and research about the details of this kind of construction method. After that, as a group of three, we picked an existing gridshell constructed building and find out the details of the construction. In the end, we need to produce a presentation board and construction detail models.
