Architecture Design Project
Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment, the design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing strategy to resolving social issues pertinent to the conditions of the urban landscape (for example, elderly, neglected communities, school, youth center, woman empowerment, skills training center and others). Located in an urban area, students are to further develop the site through an area chosen by their design supervisors, in which it will address the social needs of a particularly urban place and provide interaction and connection of people in the urban spaces. Subsequently, students are to produce a detailed design of a selected portion of the scheme. The design work is to be supported by a comprehensive design report.
Teaching Objectives
-
Develop awareness in the mediation between socio-cultural needs, the desires of internal spaces and the demands of external constraints pertaining to the broad theme of ‘sustaining humanities’.
-
Develop student’s own position in architectural thinking and design.
-
Consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail with emphasis on design as an integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects if the program.
Assignment 1: Pre-Design Analysis
This module is a thematic studio based on the theme of “sustaining humanities’ architecture for people, place and time. Designing for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in our time within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, It upholds the believe that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that it can have a role in making a place civilized by making a community more liveable.
Assignment 2: Detailed Design
In addition to students ability to develop their own position in developing their individual project within the theme of ‘sustaining humanities’- architecture for people, place and time, one key aspect of the design project is to develop holistic and integrated aspects of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design.
Food & Hangout Centre: Spice Food Village
With iconic cultural buildings like Istana Budaya and National Visual Arts Gallery located in that area, Titiwangsa Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Titiwangsa) area is a culture haven with diverse local cultures. Not just the cultural buildings but also park cultures and food cultures that make us Malaysians can be seen at the site.
Despite the location of cultural buildings at the site, most of visitors came to the site just for the park itself instead of visiting the cultural buildings. This shows the fading of significance in the cultural buildings which will lead to the fade of Malaysian identity. Concluding from the site analysis, the ‘formal space’ barrier between the cultural buildings and the park-goers might be the reason behind this.
The design intention of the proposed food village is to create an informal communal area for the visitors to visit without pressure. With a theme of spices, which can be found from countless iconic local traditional food, the visitors will experience the local cultures unknowingly while visiting the centre and enjoying the local food.
With an architecture which complements and co-exists with the site, creating an open concept food village. Using a three-tier process of curiosity, experience & finale which will eventually lead the visitors to reach the climax area after touring around the food village, achieving a final goal of regaining the significance of Malaysian’s identity.

Design Process
After I received my design brief to design a food and hangout centre, I started to research about the eating habits of Malaysians.

I figured out a theme and design concept for my food centre that suits Malaysians the best and I finalized it with spices and herbs.

I started to research the types and characteristics of different spice and herbs.

After that, I research and think how to translate all of the elements using architectural language.
Following on, I continued to analyse the micro and macro site according to the requirements of my food centre.

According to the site analysis, I analysed and get the site issues that I want to focus on.
According to the requirements of the food centre, I visualized myself with the important spaces including the programme and activities.

I started to sketch and imply design strategies to achieve the final outcome I targeted.

Some sustainable design strategies as well.

I also did some block studies to design the form of the architecture.
I listed out the spaces of the food centre and look into the relationship between them to locate all the spaces at the best locations.

After that, I came out with my initial design.

I improved my design numerous times during the process, implying different design strategies following my design concept.

Finally, I came to my final design.
Design Strategy
Using a three-tier process design strategy of curiosity, experience and finale to lead the visitors from outside all the way to the climax spaces and provide a whole new experience of dining, achieving the design intentions in the end. (click on the picture to view more info)
